The Route (Georgia and South Carolina)
Reader, a quick site note before we dive into the true purpose of today’s post: In the past, I’ve kept all of the most recent posts in their full, glorious form on the front page of this blog, but thanks (many thanks!) to a few unexpected turns of events, traffic has increased quite a bit on the site, which is bogging everything down in terms of load-time (kind of like this ridiculously run-on opening sentence is loading everything down in terms of blog-time). Anyway, from now on, when you come to the end of the first paragraph of all posts, assuming you want to keep reading, you’ll have to click a “jump” button that looks just like this one:

Congratulations on your first successful whatwevegot.com jump, reader. That feeling of nausea is normal, and will pass in about an hour. Now, on to bigger and better things.
Ah, the second leg. As you see below, the second leg of my upcoming 1,300-mile journey will take me all the way through Georgia and South Carolina:
The route takes me farther away from the coast the longer I trek north, which appears to mean a couple of things. First, I’ll have to say goodbye to the nice sea breezes. Second, the towns I’ll be walking through will go from touristy to tiny. Finally – and this will be a big one, I’m sure, in the opinions of those who have offered to meet up with me at various points on the walk – there are fewer pet-friendly hotels lining the second leg. There will be a couple of different stretches where I’ll have to go as many as eight days before I sleep with a roof over my head (and more to the point, with a shower at my disposal). But, well, shit, man. This walk ain’t supposed to be for the faint of heart.

You might notice that I’m passing near Savannah, but not actually going through it. This is disappointing, as I’ve always wanted to visit Savannah, but have never had the opportunity. I’m not sure why that particular city has always intrigued me. Maybe it’s because when I think of Savannah, I always picture row after row of antebellum houses, all of them haunted straight to hell.
The thing that jumps out at me when I look at the route in its entirety is that each of the three states I’ve plotted to this point has roughly the same miles-per-day average. That was purely by accident – and I’m sure a mathematician would tell me it’s nothing magical – but it’s funny how the average distance between two habitable towns has been roughly the same so far.
Well that does it for me today, reader. If you know anybody who might be willing to take in a stray walker in Sycamore, SC or Monroe, NC, please drop me a comment. I’m betting I’ll be plenty ready to get in out of the tent by Day 8 of each of those stretches. Guest Post Thursday again tomorrow, where Tom Williams re-brings the glory. Stay tuned.
